An inspiring story about some UC Santa Cruz students that won't rest while 2 million Darfur refugees are in danger. Our voices will be heard if we persist, and there are many on this planet that could use advocacy, especially by Americans and other westerners who have the freedom to speak out and instigate change.

City leaders tackle violence in Darfur
The City Council is sending a message to world leaders calling for an immediate end to the killings and human rights violations in the Darfur region of Sudan.
The council unanimously adopted a resolution Tuesday that includes authorizing the mayor to send letters expressing the city's position to President Bush, the city's congressional representatives and United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.
The mayhem in Darfur includes mass killings, rape, pillage and the fouling of water sources, the U.N. reports. Approximately 2 million Africans have been displaced, which has led to mass malnutrition and death in the region.
Councilman Mike Rotkin said the idea for the city resolution was brought to him by several UC Santa Cruz students who believe something should be done to halt the violence against Sudanese ethnic groups by Arab fighters known as Janjaweed.
UCSC students Alexander Wan and Brish Miller spoke to the council in support of the resolution.
